Clogged kitchen sink - recommendations?

Putting a drain auger in my kitchen sink drain would make me nervous. A commercial drain ok, but not these thin brass lines. A lot of these brass lines are already worn thin from all the acidic foods and stuff we put down them.

Can anyone recommend a plumber or other service to unclog a kitchen sink?

We had Roto Rooter stop by, and their estimate (~$700 or so) seems crazy. A few other companies want to charge (around $100) to show up and give a quote, which seems like a waste.

Your best bet is to get a recommendation for a local plumber who specializes in drains and has been in business for years. I can’t recommend people because I work for Brownstoner, but others here can. Plumbers who specialize in drains typically charge a flat fee per drain to unclog a clog. We have in the past paid $350 or so for the first drain and $100 for each drain after that (I can’t remember exactly), but prices have gone up recently and probably start at $450 or so.

Put a bucket underneath, unscrew trap, run and twist auger( snake) put it back together, flush with hot water and repeat! Roto rooter is doing just that, for clogs in the main line you will need their service. Trust me, it’s not a terrible job but easy enough and could happen frequently so worth doing it yourself if you can!

See what john hancock says. That is it right there. Do not do it before eating.

Also, i always remember my father getting mad at me for putting grease down the drain because it would clog the line. Not only that but one time asca young adult i poured grease down the drain without running any water behind it. The grease settled in the trap and hardened on top of the water in the trap. I went to run water & no go. I used a heat gun to heat the clog and it cleared and i flushed it out with hot water. Now if i pour grease down there i run piping hot water ahead of it and behind it.

Some traps do not have a cleanout. Go to home depot and get a mini drain auger. Cheap plastic thing you can push down there. We keep a few here.

I realize this is about a kitchen sink but people reading this should know plungers are a pain in the neck on bathroom sinks because of the overflow. It allows the pressure created by the plunger out. If you can

I guess you could cover the hole. After reading this I realized that my kitchen sink DOESN’T have an overflow. That surprised me because it’s only about five years old. My upstairs bathroom sink doesn’t have one either, but it’s salvaged from a c. 1910 house.

I would guess that both your bathroom sink and tub have a vent/overflow. On the sink do you have a part like in the picture, that is used like a stopper to allow the sink to fill? If so, that part also acts as a vent/overflow . You might have something similar outside your tub for taking a bath. Same principle. They have holes near the top of the tube that acts as overflows.
