Chipped Porcelain Toilet
Hi All!
Unfortunately there was some damage done to my almost brand new toilet. I called a bunch of places that repair tubs and sinks in Brooklyn but no one does toilets. I see patch kits available online, but I’m not convinced that I am qualified for this job. Does anyone have experience or advice–or know who I might call to do the repair? Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you Dave!! I actually had just ordered a 2 part epoxy patch kit before I saw your response. It says that if you sand it, it will come to a hi-gloss finish, but if not, nail-polish is a great idea. Before replacing it, I’m going to try my best to see if I can fix it! Thanks again for all the input/advice!

I too would use body filler or any two part epoxy. Put it on in layers so you don’t have to sand much and further scratch the surface, If you need to have a backer in the hole, anything will work but probably a small piece of steel wool. I once heard but never tried that nail polish is an excellent way to match the colors on chipped tiles, etc. It makes for a nice high gloss. And cheaper than a can of paint.

I think it might be really hard to hire someone for such a small job. FWIW I once repaired the chipped base of an antique pedestal sink with automobile body patching putty and painted the repair with the closest color auto touch-up paint I could find. The chips were much worse than on your toilet and, 25 years later, it’s barely noticeable. You might try something like that. If it really bothers you afterward you could replace the toilet bowl, but that probably won’t be necessary.
