cheapest place to get hardwood flooring

With people who dont do a lot of this work, i sometimes see a move to overshop. For pennies. You want to get it done and done right. If a few pennies a square foot make a difference in a job, and this goes for anyone on here, you should not be doing it. Hold off on any job until everything, including the money aligns.

I am a contractor. Years ago i wasted time doing work and trying to do work for people who wanted it now, had champagne appitites, and beer budgets. If a hundred dollars is a problem on something that might be 5000 or 10000 to complete, something is off and the job will be a problem to complete. The pressure put on contractors in such situations is wrong and the jobs always lead to problems and i honestly feel that customers who make money the overriding concern jinx themselves.

Go find the flooring at east side in manhattan, pc flooring on 3rd ave or new york buy lowes. Talk to the three of them. Decide who you like and who you want to answer your questions, and go with them

The prices for tongue and groove oak are all pretty close no matter where you look. In the past i have tried lumber liquidators only to end up buying it from new york flooring a few doors to their right and just outside lowes front gate.

I’m working on some oak flooring myself, although this looks to me like it might be maple, but steve would probably know better than I. Anyway, cheapness depends also on installation cost, and if you’re getting it pre-finished, it may be cheaper to install so that’s something to consider. Unless you have a large amount of square footage though, a little amount probably won’t kill you on the budget. I’d say 3 to 5 dollars a square foot is about right. Less than 3 would be really cheap, and more than 5 you might find better. But also, before you buy cheap flooring, ask yourself what kind of lengths you are looking for. If you see a picture, and it’s 3.50 a square foot, you might not realize that it’s almost all 3 foot boards. If you’re good with that length then you’re fine, but I think you probably want some 4-7 foot or longer boards in the mix. Another factor that impacts price is whether the wood is character grade, no. 1s, no 2s, or select. Do you care if it has knots in it? Get the cheapest grade that you’re happy with the look.

The graining looks like oak. Maple would be much straighter and if it turned, it would not be fuzzy. I am looking at this on a phone though and could be off.

In the event it is maple or you desire maple, i am not sure how competitive the prices are in the city. I once bought maple for a gymnasium from hall flooring in new hyde park.

Consider going with no 1 as oppsed to select. If you want cheap something has to give. Either you buy a boatload or go with a lessor grade. There is no 2 but the knots might be risky or too close to the edges.

Is it my imagination or are the photos in the lowes link and the first home depot link the same? That in itself raises eyebrows. i do not trust anything about home depot. Go to east side flooring in manhattan or new york flooring outside lowes front gate. You might pay 10 cents more a foot but you will find better support.

You can probably get a better wood for your money if you go mill direct, but the convenience of shopping home depot may outweight that if you’re just looking for something simple and aren’t trying to match a historical look.

It really comes down to whether you care or just want a floor fast. I’d bet you’d have some issues with the homedepot lowes floors. The first would be that the lengths will be short. Does that matter to you? Take a look at a floor you like and try to judge if the average length is 3 feet or 7 feet, and how long the longest boards are. If you like short boards, then it doesn’t matter, but I’d be looking for a board length more like 7 feet if I could get it, it just looks better. Quartersawn and/or rift is better than plain or livesawn because it expands and contracts more towards the ceiling rather than along the floor, so you’ll get less gaps in the winter. It also has a nicer figure in my opinion , but that’s an opinion and perhaps contextual. Really it’s up to you, but at 5.5 a sqft I don’t think you have to settle for something.
