Can't find a plumber to run a gas line
I’ve spoken to big firms and small, but no one wants to run a gas line from the cellar to our parlor floor and 3rd floor fireplaces. We plan to convert our two WBFs to gas and will install Valor Portrait fireplaces. But it’s a non starter if we can’t get the gas lines in place. The job would involve drilling through the floors and surface mounting the pipes in the chimney breast corner. We can’t bury the pipes in the party wall because it’s not thick enough. Can anyone help with a referral?

Thanks, Cate. I’ve spoken to three chimney masons and all were reluctant but perhaps I need to sound a more urgent note. While I’m aware that some plumbers are mostly residential while others are strictly commercial, I can’t say I know what a “black pipe” specialist is. Well….FWIW a long time ago we discussed running a new gas line to our third story for a stove and our oil company at the time was eager and wiling to jump right in and do it pronto. The carpentry work involved was minor since most of the line would run through the air shaft where the main stack is. My advice would be to contact a plumber who specializes in black pipe and heating (as opposed to an all-around neighborhood plumber or a drain specialist, say), then coordinate with a carpenter to open up the appropriate channels and, after it’s all done, bring in someone who can do drywall or plaster (whichever is needed). Thanks for the suggestion, GreenThinker. We’re actually pretty committed to the gas fires because we need the supplemental heat and also already have fully rebuilt, working flues.

Have you thought about doing a ventless gel alcohol fireplace? Won’t have to worry about running gas pipe, chimney vent pipe, dealing with all the roof/floor/wall work

Would love to get some feedback! The issue may be that this falls between the cracks in that it’s in essence a carpenter/mason project but of course needs to be overseen by a plumber. Better handled, I appreciate, during a major renovation with open floors and walls, but that’s not our situation. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
