Buying cedar locally
i was at Riverhead in Mineola yesterday. they have 1×6, 1×8, 1×10 cedar in the overhead rack. they also have some 5/4. i did not look at it as it was up top but i suspect it is probably clear (read pricey). they also had some 2×4 and 2×6 cedar in the outdoor rack on the side of the building. this did not look like the same kind of construction cedar that HD carries (studs for interior walls) but looked more like cedar for outdoor projects. i am not certain as i have very rarely use this kind of wood and it has been a long time.
stock is limited so if you go there and need hundreds of feet, call first.

Does anyone know where to buy cedar planks locally? We are planning on building a horizontal plank fence around our backyard, as well as some raised vegetable beds. We’re looking for a local source for wood planks, preferably cedar. Thanks.

Dykes might have it. Adriatic has spanish cedar. And riverhead building supply in mineola has cedar.

Riverhead building supply is cheaper than dykes. The last time I bought cedar, I called dykes and riverhead and I was buying enough that it was worth my time to go from queens to mineola.
If you go to mineola, call first as sometimes they have to bring it from out east. Their cutoff for the following day is about 1 pm.

Dykes is $ 1.74 per foot for 1×4 (I asked 3 weeks ago).
Does Riverhead deliver to Brooklyn?

Ok, the wood I bought some years back was the 1×4 you mention. But riverhead also stocks wider 1x. Maybe 1×6 or 8? Not sure, i see it in the overhead rack.
Keep in mind, there are different grades of cedar. That 1×4 has knots.
Yes they deliver into the city. There is a charge.
Also, there is a place that john Hancock has mentioned out in NJ, just over the bridge from staten island. Forget the name of the place but they are worth a call.

Home Depot on Hamilton Ave sells cedar 5/16 by 6” boards. They also have 2×4 and on occasion have 2×6.

Home depot does not sell the kind of cedar OP is looking for to build a fence and planters. the cedar HD carries is construction lumber or in the case of the 5/16×6, that is liner to make wood chests or drawers into cedar lined chests or drawers. Op is looking for fine boards.
in addition to rosenwieg, i would call Lenoble. Lenoble is not my first choice for anything this specific as every time i call them (i called them a couple weeks ago looking for Fir and they did not have it) they don’t seem to have it. but worth a try and they have a big warehouse behind the front of the shop.
