Brownstone - Front Door needs support under it

the load on the door and frame are not carried by the saddle. It is carried by the side vertical framing which is supported by vertical framing below…. you are worrying about nothing

We are using Windows We are to order and install landmark approved double entry doors. While we wait for landmark approval, my current door saddle recently cracked and when we lifted it up, we saw there was no support under the door frame. I do not want to install an expensive door that will not hold up without support.

The Windows We Are representative came to look at it and said he would speak with his boss to come up with a plan. I am a bit worried about this and wonder if this is out of their typical scope of work. Cant be that uncommon that when replacing a door in an 1840s home, additional support needs to be added underneath.

Any suggestions? One person mentioned to me that they should put a steel lintel under the whole door so the saddle holds in the future.

This doesn’t really make sense in a typical row house. What is under the saddle? Is it just a void and you can see the top of the door frame of your garden entry door?

You see empty space when you lift our broken saddle. Perhaps the concrete may have crumbled under it because when we replaced the vestibule floor – they had to bolster the subfloor and remove blocks of concrete that were sitting on the ceiling of the floor underneath.

Steel would be overkill. Without a photo it’s hard to tell but it sounds like the “void” could either be filled with concrete or pressure treated wood used to rebuild the substructure. This shouldn’t be a difficult job for anyone.
