Brown bin organics collection
My solution to stinky bins has been to put a little yard waste in the bottom of the waste bin every once in a while, especially if it smells.

Anyone in a multifam doing the brown bin organics collection? DSNY just dropped off the bin in this neighborhood.
Are tenants complying?
Do they want it?
Do you get specialized bags?
Is it messy for collection day?
Already I gotta take bags out of of recycling and empty them in correct bins, not going to do that with good scraps.

We’ve had them in our area over a year. I’m a fan, but we don’t have a bunch of people using ours so I can’t speak to that.
They provided an in house bin/unit with ours. It has a lid and handle so is easy to keep on the counter top and then dump in the brown can. We use small sized eco bags (bio bags is one brand) in ours about half the time.
You can buy larger bags (again, they must be compostable) to line the can or for bigger things. I put a lot of food waste in our and it never seems to hit the street when they dump them in the trucks and the cans aren’t super gross. I’ll just leave the lid open during a rainy day after pickup a couple of times in the summer then dump the water in the street and they are clean enough for us. They pick them up every trash day.
I also like that I can put yard waste in it (leaves, branches, old plants, etc.)
This stuff was already going in your trash can, so it’s not like it really affects smells around the trash cans. We have plenty of rats and raccoons around here and they’ve not been opening the bins.

I added a rider to my leases saying that tenants are responsible for complying w/ NY rubbish & recycling rules. Brown bins have worked well for 18 months. The compostable bags are expensive imo so I’ve recommended wrapping the waste in newspaper – which is allowed – or putting it in brown paper bags from the supermarket.

we have a three family and live in one unit, and yes, on our small scale the brown bins are working great.
they lock so in theory deter rodents better than normal trash cans if you can get all your food waste in there

people don’t clean these, and dont buy the bags (as if you could ever find them). Its completely disgusting, if you have a multifamily building and people are accumulating waste inside with those tiny inadequate buckets, get ready to up your exterminator bill. Assuming you have a water spigot to clean the outside cans, (many small buildings do not and as a result my nabe is full of cans that haven’t (ever) been cleaned). The road to hell is paved with good intentions. (including the most putrid e coli and salmonella complete with unlimited filth flies to spread it all around on collection day). but yeah, its a great program.

I consider myself a compliant recycler of paper and cans/bottles. Composting is something I cannot get onboard with, especially these kinds of bins with no airholes. I’ve heard horror stories about maggot infestations, terrible smell (common with meat), and just all around messiness. Even though I won’t do it, I have asked my tenant if she wishes to compost, with the understanding that she will be responsible for the upkeep of the bin and putting it out for pick up on garbage days. We shall see how it works out.

We have been doing it for years now.
It is amazing how much organic waste you produce if you cook, We scrape the plates so nothing organic goes into the regular kitchen can. Here is a recent NYTimes Magazine story from February 2017 “The Compost King of New York” Also there is a huge, (60 bag limit) free compost giveaway on Staten Island coming up for home owners.
Now that they are about to start up the Hamilton Ave. container facility in Gowanus they want to pull out as much compostables as possible. Our block mostly complies and they pick up the brown cans on the same day as recycling. The cans do not leak and the lids lock tight so no bugs or flies can get in or smells get out.. They are on wheels so no lifting is required.
In winter months there are no problems but in the summer the problems occur in the apartments not the outside can. I suggest that you keep your waste in the freezer until the night prior to pickup The plastic green bags are expensive so we use the paper bags from the grocery store or plastic bags and then empty the contents out of the bag into the bin. We were provided with a plastic bin that is dishwasher safe that you can hold and transport your kitchen waste to the brown bin but we have those tiny ants that always show up in the spring. The brown cans do stink inside if you don’t wash them ever so often but your super can hose it down with the other
cans. If your tenants are lazy the system breaks down pretty fast, but then you know which ones are dumping the plastic take out containers still full of food in the recycling bin and they are hopeless. I find the brown bins very helpful in getting rid of yard garden waste as well.

Hi to all in this Forum from Dublin in Ireland.
In relation to using small compostable bags for collecting of food waste in one’s kitchen, do all of you find it difficult to source them?
Here in Ireland I supply these as an annual bundle based on using 2 to 3 a week. I have a lot of visitors to my site from the U.S. and used to wonder why. I think I understand now. If any of you would like to try an annual bundle and then report to this group on their ease of use please give me a shout through a reply here. Great to see such interest in organics collection.

Some of my tenants made good use of the brown bins, others have not. Those that have not, put organic waste without a bag and some even put their pets waste in the bin. The hallway of the building started to smell really bad and fruit flies started to appear…..followed by maggots. I tried to appeal to the tenants but it fell on deaf ears. If the bins are inside the building, I think it’s a bad idea.

We do composting–It’s fantastic. An outdoor spigot makes cleanup a lot easier. I also recommend buying the bags at least for the outdoor bin, but on the occasions when there are none cleanup is fine. Contra dorkofwindsor’s implications, I don’t smell any odors or notice any unusual dirt with any of the bins on my block. Certainly never seen maggots or anything like that. The same can’t be said for some of the buildings with residents who do not compost — I see low quality bags with open rips on the sidewalk.
I can see the issues raised by the multifamily building — I am not sure how to monitor 8 or 16 households. Arkady — are riders enforceable (especially in a rent stablized environment)?

Between this program and basic but diligent recyling, we have inverted our sanitation needs–we have 2 days of waste pickup and 1 day of recycling, but our needs are for those to be reversed.
The brown bins are in our experience not terrifically designed. They do stay locked which is huge, and having wheels is clutch. But they tip over easily if they are empty or only partially full, which can create a holy hell mess. They have lots of nooks and crannies in the base that trap filth—in summer we pop it open and they’re basically fly generators. I don’t think having a drain at the bottom would be better, but once they get filthy, which is fast, the only way to clean them out is spray them with a hose and the only place to dump all that is in the street and then your street smells like a crypt in the summer heat. We cook a lot, sowe fill ours frequently, and haven’t yet figured out a good way to manage them.

We have been using the compost bins for our home (not multifamily) a couple years now and are huge fans. We cook a lot and I have a small bin with a bag in my kitchen that I typically empty every couple days into the brown bins outside. Originally I did not use bags, but the bags keep it tidier and more together so I ordered a huge box (something like 500 bags) of biodegradable compost bags online, which brought the cost way down and has worked well. For the bins themselves, I hose them out and wipe them down well in the spring, then let them dry fully upside down and go from there, leaving them open only if they are dry and empty. We got maggots once a couple years ago when we unknowingly went away and left compost in the bin, but otherwise I have found that between cleaning them periodically, using bags, and not letting the compost sit inside it’s fine. And the trash inside is much less trashy, to boot. I also like to sweep leaves and other sidewalk things into the bin, which keeps it a little dryer overall.

My solution to stinky bins has been to put a little yard waste in the bottom of the waste bin every once in a while, especially if it smells.
