Hi all,
Hoping one of the code whisperers on this forum can help me with my Brooklyn deck question.
I recently moved into the garden apartment of a coop building. My upstairs neighbors have a deck and I have the area below the deck. I’ve been looking into doing some renovations under there so have been doing initial research.
The first thing that has jumped out at me is that the area under a deck can’t have “storage or usable space”. What does this mean? Am I not supposed to use the area under the deck? How is that possible? I need to walk under the deck to exit the apartment.
I have a lot of other questions, too, but first things first! Thanks in advance for your help.

That’s generally interpreted as enclosed space (like a rear extension). If there’s enclosed space under the deck, then it’s really a terrace, not a deck.

Speaking of storage under a deck, I saw a photo of a wooden built-in seat with storage and thought it looked really attractive, comfortable and practical. It was on the party wall side under a deck.
