Bluestone sidewalk violations

Try WP Bluestone in the Bronx. 718-653-3096. They have done several sidewalks near us (Prospect Heights) and the results look impressive and have held up well — one is the sidewalk I walk every day to the subway.

We have a 21×10′ sidewalk that, along with the rest of the block) has just received a violation. In reality. all of our flags are in pretty good condition (no breaks or cracks) except for the cutouts for the the gas and water shut-offs. On the violation sheet, the flags are marked either broken or trip hazard. I really can’t see either except in some places there there are gaps between the flags (filled with dirt to be level with the flags). Are there contractors out there who can make sense of the complaint and cure this violation? Is there any chance we can get DOT to be specific in what they want? Or is our only solution ripping out the appropriate bluestone in front of our 1840’s house and putting in an ordinary concrete sidewalk and curbing? Even though we are not in a landmark district, we don’t want to give up the bluestone.

If the whole block has received sidewalk violations you will be better off working as a block and letting the City come & make the repairs etc. If you are not land-marked the City will probably replace it all with flush concrete. (Their contractors will “dispose of” ; steel your blue-stone)
From prior experience you as an individual will never get the City to sign off what you believe is corrected if you do it as an individual..

Either just you or the whole group should ask for a second inspection which is often less rigorous. The rule of thumb is any discrepancy of more than half an inch is a violation. People w/ tree roots causing a heave can get a pass since you’re not allowed to touch those.

Thanks. Guess m best bet is to get a reinspection. Do the bluestone sidewalk contractors work witj the city to cure the violations?

I had the same violation, I used Carlos Serna, Stones-R-Us for repair. The city inspected it, cleared the violation and even complimented Serna’s work.

The trip hazard notation means that there is a difference of 1/2″ between flags. They can be reset and leveled or the protruding edge can be ground down to be flush.
