BLOCKING OFF A PARKING SPOT WITH CONES?

Last night I was circling the block trying to find a place to park and I noticed an opening that was blocked off by 3 orange cones, so I got out and moved the cones to the sidewalk and parked. Then this morning when I went to the car a guy came out of the house I was parked in front of and confronted me about being a “bad neighbor” for moving the cones he had placed to save his spot because “it is hard to park around here.” I tried to explain the absurdity of his argument and that parking spots are public property so he has no right to do that. He kept accusing me of not knowing “how it goes around here”. Admittedly I only moved to the block a year and a half ago but I have lived in Brooklyn with a car for 20+ years…..anyway, is there some sort of unspoken rule I am unaware of or is this guy full of it?

Definitely NOT legal in NYC to hold a public parking spot and you can file a 311 complaint on him. Personally I wouldnt take the spot since I dont want my car damaged or tires deflated. There are rural parts of Brooklyn and definitely Staten Island where this is more common practice and unwritten rule with the local community.

Just curious: What neighborhood? Asking because I’ve found in some nabes that are primarily comprised on one or two family homes homeowners feel like they have an absolute right to park in front of their houses. And for some reason that’s universally accepted by everyone. It’s kind of a carryover from the suburbs where I have found its considered unmannerly to park in front of your neighbor’s house. Of course, it’s easier not to do that in the burbs. Bottom line is it’s wrong and you could call 311, the DOT and your local precinct to complain. But as DIBs points out you might put your car at risk.

Not sure if it’s illegal to do but it’s self-entitled and he’s an ass and we all know that but you were a jerk to take it and you’re lucky he didn’t vandalize your nice new car.
