BLOCKING OFF A PARKING SPOT WITH CONES?

Last night I was circling the block trying to find a place to park and I noticed an opening that was blocked off by 3 orange cones, so I got out and moved the cones to the sidewalk and parked. Then this morning when I went to the car a guy came out of the house I was parked in front of and confronted me about being a “bad neighbor” for moving the cones he had placed to save his spot because “it is hard to park around here.” I tried to explain the absurdity of his argument and that parking spots are public property so he has no right to do that. He kept accusing me of not knowing “how it goes around here”. Admittedly I only moved to the block a year and a half ago but I have lived in Brooklyn with a car for 20+ years…..anyway, is there some sort of unspoken rule I am unaware of or is this guy full of it?

I agree with everyone that you are totally in the right, randi, and it is just a question of whether and when to pick this particular fight. Use of cones like this is really limited to holding a spot for a dumpster or something like that (in which case, we all know you use garbage cans and crime scene tape, not cones).

This happens in Queens all the time after a snow storm. Haven’t seen it in Brooklyn. He’s pretty gutsy to try and pull this prank. I bet his neighbors hate him.

My neighbor (who you’ve read about my issues with before, Randi) does this with his 2 commercial vehicles (and he uses his driveway/garage for parking his car). We have called 311 but they’re not interested in enforcing. My husband is a crank so he always moves the cones back onto the sidewalk when he sees them but there doesn’t seem to be any “enforcement” for people who do this beyond just moving them and parking there yourself.

@randolph I think it’s pretty unneighborly, thus our guilt back when we thought it was needed–even if we recognized the necessity. FWIW PLG, and especially Lefferts Manor, is a pretty tight-knit neighborhood where people think about such things, I’m glad that we’re both now retired and back to just one car.
