Black Patina on Steel
hey steve i ended up using a black patina called black magic by sculpt nouveau. it turned out ok. you really have to sand down the steel to roughen up the surface, essentially creating more surface areas and micro pores so the patina can work its magic. the patina darkens the more times you apply it

Hi all, I’m looking for recommendations to achieve this look.

That’s the product I’ve tried and didn’t work. Followed the steps thoroughly and nothing would happen when I applied the stain.

Gun blue will work on steel. But if you go to abbott paint on eagle st and walk in along the left. The products they have used to be on they very left wall 2/3 the way back. In gallon jugs. But i think they are now across from the cash registers. I’ve never used what you are asking about. I have only blued steel.
Also, sometimes when i am working with stuff like this, i go to the art supply stores around the pratt campus.

Also, when using these chemicals and processes, it is good to run an etching acid over it first. Any barrier of anything, oil from fingers or invisible oxydation will impede the process.
Go to abbot paint. The guy who replaced charlie is not as competent as charlie was so you will want to do some reading behind what he says.

I’ve used this: https://www.birchwoodcasey.com/products/super-blue-liquid-gun-blue-3-oz.html
(It’s maybe not quite as black as your photo, but almost black.)
Also you could try these products:
https://sculptnouveau.com/collections/finishes/products/traditional-black-patinas
I used this company’s wax over the gun blue.

This is great. Someone just called me tonight and asked about stripping an interior steel door and i told them if they blue it, they will have to protect it. I told them try auto wax. Maybe linseed oil. But i would give that companies wax a go and if the properties are like any run of the mill paste wax, use it.
