Best paint for heat riser?

We painted our risers 17 years ago with BM semigloss latex and have had no problems since. Gives you the option of matching the wall color which Rustoleum doesn’t. Paint always adheres better to a properly prepared surface so if the riser has a lot of flaking areas, give them a sandpaper rub them down.

What paint is best for heat riser? Does original paint need to be scraped off?

our painter used a shellac paint (Benjamin Moore brand) on the heat risers (steam heating). He said it was the best, because it didn’t bubble/flake like typical latex and can bond with anything. I think they scraped off all the loose bits from the prior coat (which was latex), but did not completely strip. Hope that helps.

Rustoleum makes high-heat spray paint which we’ve used wherever possible, and it works well, they have it in multiple colors. Would love if they had more brush-on but so far have only found it in black. I’ve also used brush-on paint made for automotive use (engines, etc) in some cases. Yes, definitely best to scrape all old paint off first or else even the best new paint will eventually flake.
