Best flooring for a finished basement?

What flooring is best for a finished basement that occasionally gets some water?
I know tile is great but expensive.
What other options are there? Does vinyl hold up or can water get under and allow mold to grow?
Would love to hear some advice from people who have finished watery basements- thank you!

We’re finishing a basement space and will add french drains inside and out as well as a dehumidifier in the ducts so that we can handle water that does enter and prevent mold. I’d rather it end up as overkill then have to add it after the fact or pay for repairs and damaged property.

We installed it once and scratches very easily and the seams come undone. Get something sturdier and more long lasting.

I agree that “luxury “vinyl planks look nice, in t hug wit place. I recently put some down in my pantry. I don’t know if I’d want it elsewhere.

That stuff looks nice but it says it’s click lock. That makes me think it still leaves the potential for water or mold to get underneath which could necessitate a full rip out if there was any flooding

We are about to put tile down to finish our currently semi-finished basement, and we chose large format porcelain tiles after much research and reading of old brownstoner posts 🙂 We are now looking for a tiler with experience with radiant heat (which we will install below the tiles). How about a Gorilla Garage Floor. It is epoxy. I had one in another house and once it cures we could hose it down for easy cleaning. You might just have make sure you have not draining issues underneath the flooring so it doesn’t break the seal. It also comes in a wide range of colors.

Do they still make inlaid or battleship linoleum? We used to get that at Bergen Tile for our rental kitchens. Harder to install because it was stiff, and cane in 6 foot wide, only. But tough stuff.

I’m actually wondering the same. We’re in contract on a house with a semi-finished basement that will need floors. We plan to do a substantial basement reno in 5-7 years but want it usable in the meantime, so I’m thinking either LVT or even sheet linoleum which I’ve heard is worlds better than when I was a kid in the 80s. Any thoughts on those as options?

Large format tiles. Or go to a restaurant supplier and buy a ton of those kitchen mats. They sometimes come in 5-8 foot lengths and you can pick them up, wash them off, get them wet and re lay them. Or try some outdoor rugs made of polypropylene. They are basically plastic, colorful and fairly indestructible and a site like Wayfair may sell them at a good price. Good luck.

My neighbors had a new concrete floor poured in their cellar and finished with an epoxy coating. Looks bullet proof — and surprisingly attractive.

Please reconsider digging into your pocket a little deeper for large format porcelain tile over concrete especially , if you use the space for exercise, office, Game room etc. Or have someone pour out self leveling concrete and then paint it. as you would do in a garage. Vinyl will look okay but it will last only around 15 years. Or less. Mold grows in vinyl not just under it,. And in a few years the glue seems to stop working and you will be patching loose tiles, so buy extra. Vinyl will also get lumpy or pebbly looking from walking on it, unless the substrate is as flat as a pancake.
