i have only done beeswax on raw wood. you smear a shitton all over it, and buff it really hard to create heat. then let it soak in for a few hours followed by a second hard af buffing. it usually takes about 3 coats.

You might want to try Howard Restor-A-Finish. It won’t strip your wood surface — I’ve used it safely on some very precious antiques — but will clean it and add color (there are a number of choices). Then you can wax.

Thank you! We are looking for a matte finish but also want the wood to be a slighty warmer tone, any suggestions?

It all depends on what the current finish is. As well as the final finish you are looking for.
But no you never apply an oil first if you want a finished beeswax finish.
