Bed Stuy Hancock and Patchen

One word of caution, not knowing the school you are thinking of faking an address for….some schools will do a home visit and require to see the child’s room and the child in that residence. As well they will verify the family name to a Con Ed bill. So you better get a room set up in Kensington. Also, Kensington is RIPE for growth and is 100 times safer than Bed Stuy. Check it out!

Anyone familiar with this area? My wife and I are looking into getting a brick townhouse here and wanted to know if this was a good area. I know this part of town is in transition but if anyone has experience living here it would be greatly appreciated.

On Macon btwn Ralph & Patchen, a little over a year now. Absolutely love it. Quiet, pretty block. More importantly, wonderful neighbors with a true sense of community. Homes are very well kept here, owners have been here many years and their is a true sense of pride in most of the homes. Honestly, my only worry is if I am in a rush I may run into a neighbor and wind up spending time chatting!

thanks for the reply. I have read that it is very neighborly area and that you do have to take time and acknowledge everyone. I am generally very friendly but was worried since this is a complete new part of town for me. I grew up in nyc but have really never went to bed stuy because of its reputation. I have spent many weekends in this area and really like its charm. But I also search feverishly about it’s safety and I come across things that frighten me a bit. I am not an investor and will be starting a family here so it’s also important that they will be safe.

We moved from long island to Bed stuy lived on Chauncey Between Malcolm X blvd and Stuyvesant for Two years, I have a wife and five year old. I will be honest the neighbors are great people, the area is changing. You have to be careful cause not every block is the same, the block we were on had a project building, there was always something happening, cop presents almost everyday and we didn’t like the schools for our daughter. So we move closer to Clinton hills were the schools are much better(“PS11″we do love bed-stuy) My advice if you are looking to start a family you have to thinking about not only the block you live. schools etc.

Thanks metalwork for info. I have been thinking about schools and how that is going to effect my family. I looked into private schools but it’s way too expensive. My parents live in kensington and I might end up using their address for schools there instead of bed stuy. It will be easier for my mom to pick them up after school as well.

Tough choice, great upside from a property perspective, schools are rough. This is the hood, you’re never going to feel really good about any of the precinct data you read, or any other metric of that sort. It’s a block by block situation. FWIW many people were raised in this neighborhood in the 70’s and 80’s, long before it was cool or remotely “safe” and turned out just fine. Good parenting is more powerful than any school.

Well said Apop. Definitely a block by block situation, and I highly recommend walking/driving the area at varying days/times. You can find trouble in ANY neighborhood if you are not smart about things or looking for trouble, but the bottom line is you need to feel comfortable with your surroundings. Regarding schools, our kids were already in their current school in another district before we moved here, so we wanted them to stay there. Makes it a bit of a challenge with the commute, but by now we are used to it and don’t even think twice. We have found other families who have recently moved here as well and who’s kids are in our school, so we have formed kind of a “network” of helping each other get the little ones to school. Again, can’t say enough good things about our neighbors and specific block, it just feels good, and I wish you luck in your search.

Of course, loads of people do it, but the business of using an address where you don’t live to get your kids into a school is pretty despicable. It overcrowds the school for the residents who legitimately live in its district, and makes your residence in your neighborhood seem less than wholehearted. And what message does it send your kids? If the nabe’s not good enough for them, why not buy an apartment, instead of a house, in a different part of the city? Like Kensington! Good luck with your decision making and move. “Desipicable” is a very strong choice of word. Nearly half of all property tax revenue is used for public elementary and secondary education. If zhideng’s parent own a house in Kensington and pays property taxes in Kensington, why shouldn’t they benifit from having their grandkids go to a good school?

thanks tjbk, my parents do own a house there and have been there for over 20 years now. They continue to pay property taxes and I will eventually pay those taxes for them when they retire(which is soon).
