Do you mean the main stack? If so, you don’t want that – that’s full of sewer gas (which the p-traps on all the plumbing fixtures keep out). Also, if you’re connecting more than one fan to the same duct/vent line, I would think turning one on would actually potentially push air back into the other(s). If you mean a chimney flue, like Randolph said, be careful that you’re not using the same one that vents the boiler or HWH – you’d get CO coming back in that way. Also, I’m just hypothesizing, but if a bathroom vent is meant to remove steam, that would mean a lot of moisture in the flue which could be bad, unless you’re lining it with metal ductwork.

Is there an airshaft or light well? That’s how I ran mine to the roof – up along the inside of the light well.

Looking for advise on how best to retrofit ceiling ventilation fan in the bathrooms of a 4 unit brownstone. Can the vent connect to pre-existing vents that go to the roof or will it require removal of bricks to the outside wall?

If you are going to an outside wall, check the code restrictions that prohibit bathroom exhaust openings near windows. In most brownstones it is hard to get a legal vent on an outside wall.
