Bat house

For what it’s worth, I live in a townhouse in NJ. There are at least 6 bat houses in close proximity to my unit, but the bats still decided to colonize my attic (unbeknownst to me, until one managed to get into the living quarters one night). While it did help with the mosquitoes, the colony grew to 100 bats within 2 years and I almost had my unit condemned from the damage caused by their guano. Needless to say, the attic has been sealed, unit is repaired, and from what I can see in the evenings, the bats have moved on to other attics and still do not inhabit the bat houses.

I see that bat houses have been discussed here before (https://www.brownstoner.com/forum/#!/?bat%20house) but this talk of mosquitoes has me interested again — has anyone had any success attracting bats in their backyards?

I thought about it even got a house but Histoplasmosis, the disease you can get from exposure to bat guano, made me nix the idea

I tried a few years ago. The bat house remained unoccupied and finally fell apart. I believe bats need to have a nearby water supply – I am a little too far from either the Gowanus or other stretches of open water.
