I posted here awhile ago seeking recommendations for a slate and sheet metal roofing specialist. After speaking to a number of the professionals in expensive, brand new trucks, who wanted to “take a look at” the broken slates while they cover my old sheet metal roofs with flashing cement, and then charge me 6 figures for the favor, I went elsewhere.
Ultimately, I hired Baschnagel Brothers to replace my 100+ year old Vermont Green slate mansard roof. I also hired them to replace derelict sheet metal (tin and copper) roofs on two dormers and a bay window with new copper. While they were at it, I had them remove the derelict tin gutter lining from my front and back cornice gutters and reline with copper as well as a drip edge, and replace both leaders with new copper. They also added new copper step flashing along the mansard, and finished it with a new copper ridge cap. The crew did an absolutely amazing job, the end result is perfect and leak-free, and did so in a way that was expedient, respectful of my property and my neighbors, and professional in every way possible.
From what I understand, these townhouse jobs are no problem for Baschnagel as they primarily work on slate and sheet metal roofing for large freestanding churches, including the Church Avenue’s eponymous old dutch church, and Queen of All Saints in Clinton Hill. Their pricing was very fair — in some cases, far lower than the aforementioned flashing cement experts — and scheduling was simple and easy.
I would highly recommend Baschnagel to anyone looking for a new roof done the old way. I was not compensated for this review, and am instead leaving it here as they seem to be one of the humble “old school” shops that doesn’t have a very big online footprint.
