Baltic & Bond Safety

We are three female grad students moving to Baltic & Bond. How safe is the area currently? Will we be ok taking standard precautions i.e. not going out at night, not flashing iPhones, walking together, etc? Thanks!

No I haven’t lived there, but I would make a bet that most of the drama and crime happens within the buildings, or are between people who know each other. Random attacks are not common

Thank you for your thoughtful answer @mandc! Judging from the crime map and seeing a rape and stabbing on the block I wanted to get another perspective from people who have actually experienced the area. I’m guessing these are domestic, isolated events and hardly believe people are randomly assaulted on the streets. I have lived in large cities around the world, my friends have been violently mugged and have had cell phones stolen. However with general care and caution, not fear, I’ve felt pretty secure. Thank you for understanding that someone moving to this particular city and neighborhood for the first time might want alternate opinions in an important matter–personal safety.

While this question may seem ridiculous (although I think racist is a stretch on the bare facts of the OP) to some NYers, I remember when I moved to NYC as a student with almost no firsthand (or even secondhand) knowledge of various neighborhoods. It can be difficult to figure out what the current facts on the ground really are before you get there, which is when you have to make a housing decision. For women, these are unfortunately still not questions that can be ignored. @liz88 – relative to NYC neighborhoods generally, Boerum Hill is quite safe these days. You’ll still be in NYC which has all the issues of any large urban center so if you’re moving from another location, you may need to take that into account when determining how cautious you feel you need to be in order to be comfortable. You’ll figure it out as you go, but I wouldn’t be worried about the nabe generally.

New York has become a very safe city. There are a few exceptions, but Boerum Hill (even this part of Boerum Hill near the Public Housing projects) is not one of them. Perhaps things were different 20 years ago, but I think you should feel fairly secure, even if you go out at night.

My question is based off of the Trulia crime map and the face that the area has a higher amount of reported crime than other parts of Boerum HilI. I did not mention race. Why would race matter? Not that it matters but I am African American, Caucasian, Filipino and Armenian, my partner is Latino and I hold no prejudices against any race. I saw a post from ten years ago on this forum about the safety of a similar location and wanted to see if things have changed.
