Since they closed the household collection locations Sanitation is supposed to take whatever you put out within reason (not an engine block or construction debris). You can start by giving them a heads up that you will begin to start leaving stuff out and ask them how they want to see it bundled. Do not mix stuff like metals with boxes or glass and such. make sure you stop when the bags feel too heavy for you to lift (I would section out the heavy stuff and tape paper to those bags with the words “Heavy” or “Breakable” and I would take out or bend down any nails that stuck up. Stock up on those nylon construction bags, duct tape and twine and if they agree to say 15-20 bags each collection day then you have a plan on how to start. Then find out where the day laborers are in your area and go scout some out and offer them a reasonable day rate to move the big stuff that Sanitation cannot take into a dumpster you rent. Then you can have them skim off the top layers of dirt and bag those up to go out in the dumpster as well. DO NOT HIRE ANY DAY LABORERS who say you ha ve to drive them to and from the site and don’t hire any laborers who have a skill set above what you need. If all else fails or if you think the job and waiting for sanitation to get to it seems too much it may be money well spent to hire a clean out company. If you look at what you will spend in bags, time, tools, your back, dealing with laborers etc, it may work out to pay $1,500-2K to get it all gone to your satisfaction and then when true spring hits you are laying out the new garden. Good luck.

Anyone know what it costs for a homeowner to drop off a load of debris at any of the Brooklyn waste businesses? I figure it’s priced by weight? And anyone have any location to recommend?

it’s like $200 a ton or something like that. they weigh your van on the way in and on the way out. I went to a place in east Williamsburg, think it’s called Cooper.

If you want to make it harder for yourself, which is how this sounds, you can move all of the debris to the front of your house or stack it up in the alley. Then schedule a packer truck and load it yourself or with help. Bestway Carting has packer trucks and its about $75/yard

If you get a dumpster, you’ll get banged on weight for mixed materials. If it was all clean dirt, you could get a flat rate on a 20yd. But mixed materials, you’ll pay up.

have a few hundred demo bags worth of backyard dirty fill to go out. appreciating the @no-permitz wisdom of not keeping a dumpster any longer than absolutely necessary. happy to do the work of bagging it myself and hiring a crew to haul it through the house and ultimately away that same day. same mention of xolle and b&m and curious if anyone has more information about them or others that would be able to do this kind of job.

Garbage disposal is not that expensive.
But removing soil is. City requires preliminary testing of the soil and very few companies actually will do that. Also you will have to hire someone to dig and bag all of that soil, plus move it out of the backyard to the front of the building.
Labor will be 80% cost.
If you need any help with that pls feel free to contact us at 347.424.3553

Update over here! We ended up hiring a guy with a dump truck who was willing to take the concrete, soil (bagged), and misc wood/metal/trash. We filled a massive truck and did the labor ourselves. To anyone considering it in the future, be prepared for some serious labor. Multiple weekends of backbreaking work. However, I imagine the amount we had in our backyard + the size of it is on the upper limit. $1000 to get it taken out, but as cheap as we could find.
Now onto level, adding soil, and starting the landscaping and garden design. A perfect project for Coronavirus quarantine!

Glad to hear you got it done. Maybe you should do a soil test first before you start bringing in the new dirt and consider the types of bushes, plants or trees you will be putting in. Depending on the species, some need a high alkaline soil and some less . You don’t want to have to keep ripping out stuff you put in. Also think of drainage. You may want to run some French drains under hardscape so the water does not pool and kill the roots of things planted. If you are thinking of grass then maybe pay the moolah to have artificial grass added. It is a green alternative, they make many lovely variations and you don’t have to feed it but you and the family can lay on it etc. If you have pets though consider creating an area for them to do their thing if you let them out back. Put up some pictures, I for one would love to see the progression.
