backyard brick

Lots of old bricks were painted with lead paint. I’d use newer bricks that look old. Tumble them or something.

anybody have experience with paving a brownstone backyard with (old) brick? we’re looking to do this (covering exposed dirt, so some leveling but no demo needed), about 15×20 feet or so –
and have no idea what the ballpark costs might be, whether we need a particular kind of expert company, etc….

We did this last year. Had been collecting bricks for the better part of 7 years (found quite a few on the forum here). Laid the bricks in a basket weave pattern (two horizontal, 2 vertical) to eliminate the need for cutting bricks. We did it ourselves. Used sand in between the bricks.

@catboot – that looks amazing! tell me more! how hard was it to do, how long did it take, etc? we don’t have 7 years to collect bricks, but are willing to pay for them in order to get it done sooner…

I did this about 8 years ago. I got the pavers from here: https://www.historicalbricks.com/products/antique-paving-materials/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwoub3BRC6ARIsABGhnya6ReJ58QlmECqtvSwmrye1ppGlcGq8Fn_jdkIQ9ixAddXTaY1ZwKQaAo2QEALw_wcB (If you want to go the antique route make sure you’re using pavers and not just old wall bricks – as those will disintegrate over time.) I would also make sure to put a weed blocker underneath – even with one and sand, I’m fighting weeds each summer. It was actually pretty easy. It took one weekend to do. First we put down landscaping cloth to block weeds. After that, added some paver sand and then the bricks on top of that. The ground was already fairly level and compacted, so we didn’t have to worry about that. You can make any minor leveling adjustments with the sand and a small tamper to compact it. Once you start, it goes pretty fast. We then put more sand on top and step it into the cracks. We chose the basket weave pattern because not only is it historically accurate, but best of all, doesn’t require cutting bricks.

One thing to consider though, is drainage. Does your backyard puddle a lot when it rains? If so, you might want to consider putting in a french drain. Also easy, also super DIY friendly.
