Back of house

Hi we’re looking to either paint the back of our house or apply a tinted stucco. We don’t have any issues and nothing seems to be in need of repair so this is purely for aesthetic purposes. Does anyone recommend one or the other? Also any recommendations for someone to do this work?

Mine was light gray too. I had no issue with it. Painting it is probably the wrong thing to do but there may be much better paints nowadays than there were 11 years ago. I know there are. But that still doesn’t make it the right thing to do longer term. A new layer of stucco won’t be able to be just skim coated over it AFAIK. It’ll require new mesh and a rough coat and a pigmented skim coat. An expensive process.

Oh I see. So you need a new layer of stucco skim coat. Any mason who handles brownstone work should be able to do this. It’s very expensive however.

it’s currently stucco but it’s an ugly light grey that we’d just like to make darker so this is purely cosmetic.

OP, what is on the house now? Wood frame, brick, painted brick, stucco, PermaStone, brownstone, something else, a mix of all the above? If it’s brick and already painted, you may as well paint it again and it won’t be too expensive. If the house wasn’t stucco originally, I wouldn’t add it. It’s expensive, inappropriate, and can cause big issues with leaks if not done properly.

The back of our house was such a mess (patchy areas of old stucco and peeling paint) we thought we would have to repaint to cover all the flaws. Instead our mason convinced us to let him repoint. He removed almost all the blemishes and now our bricks can breathe but are also protected from deterioration.

While I agree that it’s not a good idea to paint previously unpainted brick, the back of my house was painted when I bought it long ago. I’ve had it repainted with water based material three or four times since and it’s done no harm.
