Ash tree loosing virtually all leaves within two weeks

Probably the ash borer beetles. They are hitting hard just outside of the city for a while now so I’d not be surprised if they are here. I’ve seen quick deaths from them. Check out this DEC link and if you suspect it’s EABs, you can get them out to check. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7253.html

We have a 30 foot ash tree in our back yard which about two weeks ago started loosing its leaves. By now, the tree is virtually naked, and I am worried it may be dying. I suspected a Anthracnose fungus infection, which is unsightly but not deadly, but I am not so sure anymore since ALL leaves are going. Does anyone have any insight or similar experience?

Oh gosh, I hope it’s not the ash borer… I’m originally from MI and the insect killed almost all the ash trees in the state. I didn’t think it had made it to NY yet, but…? Look up “emerald ash borer symptoms” online and see if the photos of the affected trees look like what’s happening to yours.

The other thing I would think with such a sudden die off is that something happened to a main root. Was there any work being done nearby that might have resulted in the cutting of a large root?

I was recently told that Cornell has agricultural extension offices in the city – I haven’t gone myself, but might be worth taking some photos and samples of your tree over there and seeing what they advise.

Sorry to hear this is happening to your tree – but I hope it can be saved!!
