Appliances -- is Wolf worth the cost? Would your recommend another product?

We’ve had a Subzero fridge in another house and I liked it so I know sometimes you get what you pay for. That said, I’m looking to buy a 30” double wall oven and 36” 5-burner gas stove top for our renovation and I’m having a hard time with the Wolf price tags. I know so much of this is personal preference (example, I specifically designed the kitchen for a stacked double oven and separate stove top because I prefer that over the more popular larger single unit). But anyone have a Wolf or choose something nearly as nice and can share their experience? I’ve been reading about Bosch or JennAir and they seem just fine. We have also had Thermadore and that was good but no one talks about them any more.
Thanks in advance.

There are frequent promotions on SZ/Wolf where you get various discounts for buying more product, which often makes any difference between Wolf and other “professional” kitchens (Viking, Thermador, Monogram, etc.) fairly small. So, in most cases, if you are already $10K+ deep in commitment to SZ refrigerator (which sounded like you were), not sure the cost savings on a “near as nice” stove and oven is worth it, even as compared to much cheaper Bosch, etc. when you consider quality, customer service and resale value of a “professional” kitchen. FWIW, I previously had a Jenn Air kitchen, which was perfectly fine, but clearly a mid-level product trying to look high end (burners not great at very high or very low heat, oven not precise (although the temperature offset was adjustable, not so on the Wolf, which I miss)).

I went with high-end appliances (Gaggenau fridge, oven, cooktop which I absolutely LOVE) and am so thankful everyday that I opted to do so.. I got them on eBay for a fraction of the list price and no tax because they were shipped from out of state. The appliances were brand new and were the end of the series. (Gaggenau was switching out their line.). The appliances were all under the same warranty that you would get from purchasing them at a local appliance store. I bring this up because people are always shocked when they hear how much I paid and that I got them from eBay. It has been my experience that people never consider buying new appliances via eBay. You just need to be very clear on what you want, because they are difficult to return. I had done a massive renovation in our home in San Francisco before moving back to Brooklyn and had a Wolf stove and a Gaggenau oven. The Gaggenau was superior to the Wolf hands down. Gaggenau has a showroom in Manhat tan if you decide to go this route. And for the dishwasher, I got top-of-the-line Miele and am so happy with it. Good luck with your reno!

As a renter and owner, having used $600 Maytag 30-in 4 burner (rent) to $1200 Sansung 5 burner (own) to $2000 DCS 36-in 6 burner (own), I must say the BEST is the tried and true Maytag.
The Maytag had 4 equal sized burners, simmered well, consistent fuel delivery, and NEVER broke. No frills may seem “meh” but really consider what you ”need”
The Samsung has 5 different burner sizes and doesn’t perform well. Good oven temp control. Terrible “stainless steel” that collects stains, prints, and scratches easily.
The DCS is amazing, each burner had excellent fuel delivery and could simmer perfectly. But never used all 6 burners at once, not even during Thxging with 14 people. And when it broke, which it did after 10yrs, bring the money!

@Mms2222 Cannot say I did, as we moved from a condo with a wolf 4 burner range that I was extremely happy with. So, when we were looking at houses, the fact that our current house had a wolf 6 burner was a positive.

@wonderednow Thank you for sharing! @chemosphere I think that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I had a 5 burner before and really loved it. It’s a bigger working surface. That’s not the expensive part it’s the double ovens that are so much more. :-/

What are you paying for exactly that a mid-end GE doesn’t have? red knobs? Nobody really uses more than one high btu burner. You need to sear two steaks at once? quick boil two giant pots of pasta water? Plus I have heard of people having trouble finding replacement parts…

I don’t have a comparison to Bosch or Jenn Air, but have had two Wolf ranges (one four burner and one 6 burner) in my previous and current home, and I can tell you that as of right now if we had to replace the current 6 burner range I would buy another Wolf in a heartbeat. I have been extremely happy with both. And, I use my range/ oven 6-7 days a week.

Not sure if it’s feasible (or desirable) for you to opt for a 36″ instead, but Viking has a true counter depth fridge (24″d x 36″w) for ~$4000. https://www.pcrichard.com/Viking/Viking-36inch-22-1-Cu-Ft-French-Door-Refrigerator-Stainless-Steel/RVRF3361SS.pcrp

Well, now I’m wondering about JennAir for a fridge instead of subzero to save 4k. We designed for a 48” counter depth fridge and there are very few options.

Omg someone else who uses the Yale Appliance Blog! LOVE IT!

To the OP: I think much depends on what you will actually be doing in the kitchen. Are you mainly a cook or mainly a baker? It’s been a few years since I looked at luxury brand appliances so I’d definitely check out Yale and see what fits your needs best since some companies do cooktops better and others ovens. Lucky for you, you’re able to select the best brand for both since you’re doing separate oven/cooktop. My foggy recollection was that Wolf did cooktops better than ovens but that’s a hazy recollection at best.

Whatever you do don’t consult consumer reports, who seems to have inherent bias against luxury/European products.

As a side note, when we moved into our house 5 or so years ago I was convinced the rather boring kitchen appliances from the prior owner HAD TO GO and I would immediately replace them with Miele, Viking, etc. Well, I’m a baker at heart and damn if the boring Home Depot GE oven didn’t kick out the best baked goods ever and I’ve used some nice ovens in the past! Super even heat, an d holds temp beautifully.

Not saying you have to go that route but definitely take a look at Yale for some real scoop! Good luck!
