Anyone know a good exterior painter?

to the person who posting the spam listing above that i speak back to in my first reply:

by my reply i just put you in the best position a contractor in this board could have been put in. that was an invitation to respond. you could have spoken back to me, proved me wrong, talked about all the jobs you have done and all the professional products you used on them for all sorts of potential customers to read. had you, i would have apologized.

why not come on here and be part of this? Post a listing in the directory if you want? Do something to prove you have the “staying power” that i keep telling people on this board they need to look for when searching for people like you.

(and by the way, i don’t think you have to place an ad to reply on here, but it pushes you into another realm if you do).

We need to get the exterior front facade of our 2-story brick townhouse in Bed Stuy painted this spring. There’s a cornice and a porch as well. Would love to get a good rec for someone reliable!

if you call the number above, 5537, be aware that something does not sound right with this recommendation. for starters, the same person recommended them for a stoop repair on another posting. i suspect they might be good masons and a lot of people think because they can do that well, that they can paint when in truth, painting is a multi step process and many people think you can just slap paint on for a day and get paid the same day.

the next thing was that they said “great price”. no one can give a great price if they are climbing up to a cornice or paying skilled men to labor for 8 hours a day without taking short cuts. the problem is the short cuts will not show through until 3 years later, long after they have been paid. all a “great price” does is lower the bar on quality and drive people who want to produce quality away from the trade. if i said i would give someone a “great price” to restore a door, they would not call me.

this is what you can do. if you call the number above, you can ask them what primers they use for the raw or weather beaten wood. you can say it, you heard someone makes an “exterior long oil primer” and ask what brand it is (ben moore). if they do not know the answer they are not painters. tell them some of the wood is so weather beaten that someone told you it should be treated with a mix of turpentine and an oil. see if they can talk about linseed oil. if they can’t they are not painters. tell them that the wood work at eye level looks ok and to keep it looking good you want them to sand before they recoat. ask what sanding grit they will use between coats (the heavier the better; i use 180 when i can, with paint. most people will say 220 and that is safe, in so far as seeing swirls through the top coat).

i have been hiring people at this level for a long time. at first i though they are not able to communicate and that was the problem. but they can communicate about other things (including money). what i learned was the problem was not an inability to communicate but something else, no training and no experience and no willingness to learn. i try to teach them and they tell me “I don’t stir paint, i don’t sand between coats, i don’t use primer”. if they are doing this day in and day out for 5 years and are a painter, and have been selling jobs, they will be able to talk about what they handle every week: ben moore paints, two or three primers, sand paper and tack cloths.

if you think the people you are talking to might be legit. ask for a reference on a job they did 5 years before and call that person. ask how they feel about the job now. if they were not painting five years ago, something is wrong. they will not have the experience you want on your house. if you are hiring a 35 year old painter, he damn well have better started painting well before he was 30. we do not learn painting in one year. not like a pro.

if you call that number and the person answering says he is the owner and the painter is on staff, tell him you want to talk to him.

I have said this on before. in commercial real estate people do not make the mistakes that homeowners do selecting contractors because they know the questions to ask, they will only hire people who carry insurance and they know insurance means commitment and longevity.

because the firm the person recommends above does the concrete and someone is plugging them for paining, i suspect something is off. they are not finding work in there main stream and have none lined up. it would be like me, a door guy (who is a really good painter) offering to come paint your house. if i make money doing doors, do i really have the time to paint your house?

I had my brick home painted 20 years ago by Amin Home Improvement, tel# 718-435-9337; he did a lot of work in Windsor Terrace/Park Slope community!! He also replaced some bricks in back of building near roof!!! He was reliable and competent.. This was done before I learned brick should not be painted because it needs to breathe!!! The paint never peeled and looks great after all these years!!!

So ceci puts forth another question to check how qualified an exterior painter is: ask them if they think it is ok to paint exterior brick. A professional contractor or trades person should not only know brick should not be painted but they should have guts to advise a customer and even tell them something is wrong. I am not saying they should not proceed, if it is safe and a customer insists.
