Any reason NOT to do this?

I’m looking at putting a small battery-powered cam on my roof to watch bird activity up there (I’m a birder and we get a great variety on our block). The best location would be on one of our vent pipes on the roof (old 4.5″ cast iron one). I was going to use zip ties to affix a short piece of pressure treated 2×4 to the side of the pipe with the camera and a small solar panel on it (below the top of the pipe). Ok or stupid idea that could cause some unforseen problem? The chimney is further than I’d want it to be otherwise I’d attach it there.

It will stain the stainless steel. Frankly, i would be more worried about a meteorite landing on my roof.

Would there be a corrosion issue if the steel is against cast iron? Also the circumference will end up being greater than 18″ I think.

You might want to use stainless steel hose clamps instead of zip ties for the attachment. I’ve used outdoor (UV-stabilized) zip ties on my roof and had them fail after a few years of exposure to the elements.

I used to have an FM radio antenna attached to a vent pipe and that didn’t cause a problem.
