Any idea what might make the wood decorative trim on ceiling bubble?
It was a leak after all–upstairs neighbor’s radiator. It really looked weird so I’m glad the answer was simple. Thanks for the ideas!

i do an awful lot of work on damaged wood and i have “not really” seen that before. now, the cracking in the paint at the bottom of the damage, that is the way water damage begins – the wood swells and contracts and softens and the paint lets go and cracks that way.
i don’t mean to frighten you and hopefully i am wrong about this, but that trail, that reminds me a “little” (does not look 100% like it) of the termite damage i saw on the outside of a house once. i don’t know a lot about this, i was called to fix the wood floor that the termites had eaten and made soft. what was wierd and also makes me think of them was, they ate the wood subfloor without ever actually leaving the 3/4″ thick pine subfloor itself but left these trails which we found when removing the finish floor above the subfloor. i followed it across the house and looked on the outside wall and there were trails going into the wood shakes. if it was my house, i would poke that with a knif e to see what is going on. and poke before and beyond the trails and see if there is something down in the wood more.
i hope i am wrong on this one.

so i just looked at photos on line of termite trails in wood and some of them look a little like what you show. being someone who rips things apart for a living, i would being poking at this myself and if i found it soft, i would rip it wide open. but if that is not you, i think i might call and have a termite inspection done. i might be wrong about this, but better i am wrong than not wrong.

Thanks! I’m getting someone else to come and look at it. The ceiling is plaster/sheetrock and it doesn’t feel soft at all. Just the wood trim.

google “termite trails on wood” or maybe even try “termite trails on interior wood” and hit the “images” option.
that is the way they are. they will eat what appeals to them and follow that. i have only seen this twice in my adult life and have only actually cut into to it once.
if you had a termite inspection, call them back. the warranty this kind of stuff.
also, when you find out what it is, please come back on here and let us know so we can all learn from it. this is not something we see very often anymore, with modern extermination.
