Airplane noise

It’s 1 am and I can’t sleep because there are airplanes constantly flying over this area in Brooklyn. There was an article written about the FAA and Port Authority diverting traffic in our area and how to file a complaint over a year ago. Seriously, at this hour? I have complained to the Port Authority online and all I receive is an automated thank you. How can they constantly get away with this and not care about our quality of life!!! There has to be another way to bring attention to this issue.

I think it is the takeoff, more than the landing, that was modified for the US Open, though it seems as though that modification is now more commonly used. But whatever our problems with airplane noise, I wouldn’t trade with Whitestone.

As I recall, David Dinkins changed the approach patterns because the plane noise interrupted his beloved US Open, so more planes were routed over Park Slope and Ft Greene. My cousin – a retired pilot – told me that pilots used the monument in FGPark as a landmark for lining up for LGA.

If you live near Prospect Park on the Park Slope side towards Gowanus, you can see and hear the REGULAR line up of planes on the approach to LaGuardia Airport everyday. Depending on the wind and weather, these planes can be higher or lower, and therefore noisier. The landings diminish as the night progresses, and there are very few, if any after 1 am on a normal night.

It is a problem, not sure there is much of a solution. I live in south slope and one of the two main Laguardia approaches is overhead. The routes have been bitterfly fought on and off for decades. But the planes have to approach from somewhere. The FAA has to manage the safe takeoff and landing paths of the three major airports and our gain would be some other hood’s loss, so moving the flight paths is quite a difficult proposition. If it is any consolation, the noise is much worse in parts of Queens like Ozone Park and East Elmhurst.

My fave related story happened several years ago when Chuck Schumer was having a press conference about it at his Slope apartment – denying it was a problem & they had to keep halting the conference because the noise of planes was screwing up the audio.
