Advice on painter who is rushing work
Don’t pay him until the job is satisfactorily completed. Touchups are usually very minor in nature and don’t include areas left “unpainted” but if the overall job is finished, withhold a few hundred dollars for the touchups. And to be told he’d come back in a year to address touchups and drips is absolutely ridiculous. I doubt he’ll ever return.

I could use some advice on how to handle a situation. We are having painting work done in our apartment – it was a big job involving repair of damaged walls (for example, cut drywall from electrical work), painting new moldings and interior doors throughout, painting all walls in ceilings. A 2-person crew is doing the work. Throughout the process, when we have raised issues of areas that needed further attention, the owner of the painting business has sometimes been responsive, and sometimes not. Overall the work is pretty good.
Last weekend the business owner informed me today would be his last day of work. I was surprised, given that two rooms remained and he planned to send his crew to another job on Wednesday. Wednesday evening I raised a number of small issues in the two rooms that had been painted (e.g., they had not painted the new baseboards in two closets), again expressing concern about how they could possibly finish this job in only two more days. He was furious at the notion that he might not be paid in full at the end of the day today. He says “touch ups” a re part of his guarantee and I can call him within the next year to fix, for example, drip marks I pointed out to him on areas he considers “done.”
I am pretty sure when I meet him there this afternoon, there will be problem areas I will want him to address. I don’t want him to come back for “touch ups” – I just want him to finish the work now, and then I’ll pay him in full, and then I don’t have to deal with this guy again. The things I will want addressed are probably half a day’s work (today is their 16th day of work). I am bracing myself for this discussion, but feeling very worried about what I am walking into this afternoon. Thoughts?

Touch ups being needed is normal but until that’s done the job is not complete. Pretty straightfoward. A small baance should be held until touch ups are complete.
