Adding wainscoting to a Neo-Grec brownstone - is it ever acceptable?

Why NOT? I’m sure many 1870s houses were “modernized” with such new touches 20 or 30 years later and it looks fine.

I’m interested know whether forum members consider it architecturally acceptable to add high-end wainscoting to a Neo-Grec brownstone which has none currently?

I’m not talking about the hideous pre-formed panels sold at Lowes, but professionally installed panelling using solid woods with Neo-Grec appropriate mouldings.

I can’t find any examples of wainscotting being added at the time of build so am I committing a design faux pas by adding it one hundred years later?

I just love the stuff.
