Accessible space under stoop

Has anyone opened up the space under their stoop? I feel like many buildings I see have an accessible space under the stoop that can be used for storage. Our stoop has a wall though, so the space underneath is not accessible. Not sure if there originally an accessible space there or not.

Has anyone gone through the process of doing this? And if so, what did you have to do for permits (if any), etc.?

The brownstone steps, which would be later than umanish’s steps, were designed to be built open. Unless designed that way, my guess is it will take some work to stabilze the steps and open them like this.

I’ve never seen a house where the space WASN’T open, with just a closet door, like in my house. I’d be amazed if you need a permit to open it, but that’s just a guess.
