Hello,
We currently have a wooden door on the front of our attached 8 family walkup and it sucks. Swells all the time and often doesn’t close fully and is noisy. It is not the original door but that does not mean it is not a quality door. And so long as you like it, it might be possible to work with it. If you want a new custom door in the style of a traditional door and have it made locally, its going to cost a fair bit. Be careful with places selling imported doors. Many of these doors are made up of thin veneers over unknown substrates and problems occur later, particularly if the varnish coating is not maintained perfectly. With traditional doors you can let the finish go for a while and be ok. Or not seal the door bottom and it won’t decay in three years.

We get called to refinish and repair imported doors. Many times they apply inferior finishes that have the stain mixed in with the “varnish” top coat and the sun beats the color out of them turning the color blonde.

Of course, i cannot tell what your original door is from the photo but i suspect it is at least a couple of decades old and if it is, it may not be made like a 1920’s door but it was probaly made here in the US in a way that is much better than import product available today.

That may be a 1920s door, actually. Cute. The building is 19th century, possibly 1890 to 1900. OP, check out the 1939/1940 tax photo of your and neighboring buildings and it may give you an idea of what it looked like originally. (If you ever want to redo the whole thing, you could engage an architect with historic facade experience and re-do the facade, windows, door, prob run you about $100K.It’s also possible the original clapboard or whatever is still under the siding and could simply be painted, with new trim, windows, door. In any case, either way, creating the door you want is the first step.)
