I need to find me someone to get some ventilation into my basement. The basement is extremely muggy with no air circulation. I just found a bunch of mold on 2 walls. I plan on cleaning the mold tomorrow and setting up a dehumidifier, but I really need to get air in there ASAP. Any recommendations? How much should something like this cost? It seems like I already have a pipe providing air to the small meter room in the basement. I’d assume they can just add an additional, larger pipe that will go into the general basement area.

you might want simply add a fan to the “pipe”. Home Depot sells 6″ duck fans or bigger onces. if you have a window – get put fan there.

Get what’s called a “radon fan” plug it into a device that will measure humidity and mount it to a 6″ or 8″ PVC pipe to vent out. Otherwise get a dehumidifier, or both

Vent the air out from floor level. Also you need a way to pull in fresh air from the upper level. Either down a staircase or a vent or hole in the floor. This is the Humidex theory and I have had great sucess with this method. The dehumidifier is great and you can see the buckets of water it extracts, but it adds a lot of heat to the cellar as it runs. I think the Humidex or similar systems are around $2000 installed, i bought one for around $900 and put it in myself..

A simple $200 – $250 dehumidifier makes a huge difference in the dampness, air, smell, mold, just keep emptying the bucket (or you can connect a pipe it should drain), whatever you do just make sure the machine runs from when the weather turns warm until it gets cold again.
