I’m looking for a licensed contractor for a gut renovation of a small kitchen in a co-op building in Kensington.  Any recommendations?  Since I work in architecture and design, they have to know what they are doing and come with referrals.

I’m about 2/3 of the way done a renovation of a house in the south slope.  so far, i couldn’t be happier with my contractor.  he has good ideas, works will with or without the guidance of an architect (mostly without), and has been very responsive to my questions and concerns.  he has worked up and down my new block, so i had referrals from many (new) neighbors, and the people near us report that he was been quiet, considerate, and not a bother.   our renovation is fairly bare bones — we’re replacing a lot of infrastructure, without implementing tons of fabulous design or layout changes.  our budget doesn’t allow for much of that.  but there is a lot of old detail in our house and he’s managed to preserve stuff like crown mouldings btwn wall/ceiling, baseboard mouldings, lovely old sub-floors, stained glass sky lights discovered under years of grime and tar . . . so we’re happy with his approach and his respect for our preferences.  (eg we’d prefer some imperfections in the service of leaving the old stuff over tearing everything out and starting fresh)  he has helped us figure out where we *can* cut costs, versus where he recommends we do not (eg not to buy a used washer dryer b/c a leak would be a huge and expensive mess, but ok to go with stove from “Build It Green” b/c low risk and easy to swap out if it fails in a few years . . . ) he is:  troy brandwein, 917-416-4240 if you call him you can say that Elizabeth sent you.  good luck!
