Contractor reco for moving door placement and removing closets

I’ve never hired a contractor before so pardon the ignorance! I’m looking for someone to tear out the closets in my Clinton Hill bedroom (we experienced a major leak and knocked out a good part of the interior drywall ourselves) and replace the drywall. Also looking to cover over the bedroom door and install french doors a few feet over. I have absolutely no idea what kind of business to call, and naturally want to get a good price. I’m less concerned with timing since we’re already living in a disaster zone! Just want someone who does good work on the cheap.

Hi Callie17- I’m looking to do an almost identical project in Carroll Gardens. Have you started / finished this work? If not, the few suggestions I have would be to call General Contractors. I was worried that the job was far too small to bother them with but most were happy to quote for it. They’re also great sources for references if they can’t do it. The GC’s have quoted higher than handymen I’ve spoken to but I also think more accurately- I’m not convinced the lower quotes would be less expensive in the end, and we had a bad experience with one handyman which will make the whole thing more expensive than any quote when all’s said and done. Some things I’ve learned- if working in a room with high ceilings (ours on parlor floor at 10’10”) and you want full height ceilings, the technical know-how needed is greater. Also, as simple as your idea of the closet you want is, get whoever you’re working with to sketch it out so you can make sure the critical aspects are agreed to (eg depth of closet enough for hangers!) Agree on the finishes and materials you want in advance – eg solid core doors or flush-mount doors both affect the framing…. (this may all be very obvious to you, if so, sorry!)
