Wood covering & adding iron gate for back deck & stairs
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/517a9ccd50955-.jpg
Hello folks, I’m hoping that some one might have a recomendation for a carpenter or ironworker who would be able to cover my small back deck and stairs with wood, and possibly to add a child gate at the top of the stairs. With summer approaching, It would allow us to better utilize them, and frankly make them much safer for the little ones. Any recomendations would be much appreciated, both of craftsmen, type of wood to use, and any experience/idea of cost. Thanks. LB

Code says you can’t have flammable decks within 4′ of property line. I have heard that ipe has drifted back and forth between class a fireproof and not in the estimation of DOB and NYFD. My understanding is that now ipe doesn’t cut it. We have a iron grating deck just like yours, and had an ipe top layer installed on it before our inspection. DOB didn’t blink at all. Still, I think you’re approach of doing it after the fact probably makes more sense. I’d stick with a tropical hardwood like Ipe or Teak – it is incredibly durable, is very resistant to fire, and is easy on the feet. There are the plastic deck substitutes as well, which are a lot easier to work, but don’t fly from a fire perspective. If it proves a problem, it would be easy to fix (remove, that is), though. Our GC did the wood, so I don’t have a specific recommendation. Gabriel Iron works did a great baby gate for us.

There are dozens of posts releated to wood decks in the archives, many refere to the fact that you can not have any wood within 4 feet of your adjacent property line. This may not be the case for your deck but it may explain why the grating was installed in the first place.
