What's the best plants for an indoor garden?

I have been thinking about starting a garden inside for a bit now. I was wondering though, what would be the best plants, as in vegetables or herbs, that a first timer like myself would start with? Any tips would be helpful.

It depends to a great extent on how much sun you get. Most herbs will do fine in small pots in a sunny window.
