what is this plant/weed in my backyard

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/518a76bc0d533-.jpg

Wondering if anyone knows the name of this weed comes every year, it develops pink flowers.  It grows/spreads close to the ground and the root systme is very deep.  Not even all the rain today softened the soil to dig it out effectively.  How to get rid of it, round-up? Thanks.

The best way is to dig it out completely with a shovel or a fork.  Go as deep as you you can, starting at least 6″ from the tap root, and loosen the soil all the way around.  The taproot should be white and thin, and once the soil is loose you can pull it out.  The advantage is that this weed grows best in compacted soil, so digging it out and loosening the area makes it less hospitable to *this* particular weed.  Of course, other weeds (the kind that like freshly moved soil) will move in, unless you plant or seed something else first.

Not tarragon, the leaves are big, 1-2 or 3 inches for a big plant.  Below is a close up.   Searching online, it’s looks like a Prostrate knotweed.

Not roundup!  roundup is controversial and may be leading to super-resistance and thus to super-bugs.  and i suspect it’s toxic to any edible plants you may have.  but i’d be interested in non-toxic suggestions.
