Tree Removal - Recommendations and thought re price?

We have a 60′ pine in our rear garden in Stuyvesant Heights that needs to be removed – it is far too large for the site it was planted in and in a storm I wouldn’t trust it not to cause damage to our (or our neighbors) property. The tree is huge! So my first question is: can anyone recommend a good tree surgeon that is reasonable? And my second question is: we have been quoted $4500 to fell the tree and another $1200 to grind the stump. We’ve been told the price is so high as the machinery that would normally be used can’t be brought into the rear garden, so everything needs to be done with handheld equipment, cut up and then lugged through the house. Has anyone had this sort of work done before? Is the quote in line with your experience? Thanks!

I also say check with Aborpolitan and possibly Urban Arborists. I’ve used both and actually got a quote from the latter on removing a similar tree and it was far less than what you got. We ended up keeping the tree so didn’t get other quotes.

It seems a bit high to me. I normally use Arborpolitan on my jobs, they are very careful and responsible.

I used Dragonetti twice – once for an urgent job after a tree fell down (causing a bunch of damage) and a second time to take down another tree to avoid another incident. Prices were reasonable and I was satisfied. $4500 sounds like too much. I would add Dragonetti to the list of companies to call, & would also recommend Urban Arborist (used them for pruning of a different tree).

I used Family Tree Service for a yard removal of a catalpa…smaller and less work than a fir but that price sounds ridiculous

That’s a wonderful list – thanks! As it turns out I already have Clearview booked in to come and do a quote and have just contacted Family for them to come out too – thanks for the tip. The prices I mentioned in my original post came from Dragonetti – I’m def glad that I’ve posted on here to get a better idea of who to use!

These have been recommended on here: Clearview Prospect Urban Arborist Ken Nicely Lawrence Schultz Family Your Tree Tree Care Rite Way Some of these may be out of business – it’s a paper list since my computer died & I lost my most recent info. I liked Prospect & Urban but a friend preferred Schultz. People on ‘Stoner recommend Family. I did find that no one service gives best estimate on different projects. And, whatever you do, don’t use Dragonetti.
