Recommendation for family-friendly garden designer?

We’re looking to do some work in our backyard, which at this point we barely use. As it stands currently, there’s a very steep staircase leading down to a small patio area (too small for our outdoor dining table) and plantings all around it (which get overgrown quickly), leaving little space for our kids to play. We’d love to find a garden designer with an eye toward making a backyard family-friendly (despite not being completely sure what that might mean). Any suggestions for do’s/don’ts for a family garden? Specific garden design companies to check out?
