Propane grills for the yard

I just finished fixing up my yard and have a patio to grill on now. The yard isn’t huge, maybe 20 X 35\. I am sizing up some propane grills to get. I’ve settled on a weber but not sure which one. Anyone have suggestions for size? I already have a round weber charcoal grill but I don’t see us using that too often given the setup time needed.

We have a Weber Q. Takes up very little space on the deck. More serious grill masters might find it too small/not hot enough but it’s fine for us. We’ve had it at least 6 years without a problem.

We have a natural gas weber grill (one of the genesis models) after years of charcoal. We have it plumbed into the house gas with a hose that allows movement, so no changing tanks and I love it. I wanted to stay with coal but my husband wanted the gas grill and I’m a convert now. You can get crappy, lighter fluid soaked charcoal at lots of places, but I had to go pretty far to get good lump coal with no extra chemicals on it (we used a chimney so no need for lighter fluid). I was skeptical about the flavor but so far we can’t tell a difference. It’s so easy to start it up and control the temperature more so than with coal that I’m using it way more often than the coal grill. When it’s hot out, I don’t have to get the kitchen hot while roasting things–I just toss it in the grill, even pizza. I got some smoker boxes (Charcoal Companion) to use with meats that we want extra smokey.

Thanks. I went with a weber genesis e-330\. It struck the right balance of size and heating time. I have a weber charcoal grill and a chimney for when I have more time/energy to properly grill.

Highly suggest getting a grill that has gas and charcoal. I use gas on the weekdays and charcoal on the weekends when I have a little more time. I don’t think we would use it half as much for cooking during the week if it only had charcoal. Also, we have one with the side burner so we can put the charcoal in a stack… speeds up the process and eliminates need for lighter fluid.

Weber S-420\. Total workhorse, tremendous heat. Have one for 3 years now right on the water and the salt air hasn’t hurt it a bit. Mt previous grill rusted away within 2 years. http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/curated

1\. Every bodega in Brooklyn sells charcoal. 2\. The point about closing the kettle grill and shutting off the oxygen really does save a lot of charcoal 3\. I find Charbroil grills to be better than Webers. There are some especially nice smaller ones that will cook for 4 if deck space is a limitation. 4\. As much as anyone says, they can’t really taste the difference if starter fluid is used on charcoal or not.

With a kettle grill, where you can extinguish the charcoal by closing the vents, there’s quite a bit of unburned charcoal left over that can be re-lit’ so it’s pretty economical to use. That being said, our summer rental has a Weber gas grill and it isn’t too bad to use, but I much prefer my Weber charcoal grill at home. Still, yr pays yr money and yr takes yr cherce 🙂

The extra 10 minutes and the hassle of getting charcoal constantly makes it seem worthwhile to have the gas grill option. From what I can tell the propane tanks last quite a while. Also, heating up the charcoal for a couple of items seems like a big time/coal investment whereas the gas grill will fire up quickly and I only need to use as much gas as needed.

If you use a chimney-type charcoal lighter, instead of lighter fluid, it takes 20 minutes for charcoal to be resdy v. 10 minutes for pre-heating a gas grill. Considering that charcoal cooks better (especially in a Weber kettle grill)and it’s a hassle to exchange propane tanks I can’t see much advantage to a gas grill.
