Installing porcelain pavers in backyard
We have an average sized townhouse backyard. We don’t have a green thumb and are away often so we are going to fully hardscape the backyard.
Following a discussion with our contractor, we were considering going with concrete pavers for most of the yard (~30 ft) and pebbles for the rest (~7 feet). We went to a masonry supply store and really liked the outdoor porcelain pavers we saw.
Question for the Forum – Our contractor suggests laying the porcelain pavers over thinset (after leveling and adding a sufficient amount of pitch away from the house and towards the back of the house where the pebbles will be). He also told us that b/c porcelain expands and contracts differently from concrete, he will include .expansion joints every 8–12 feet.
The masonry supply store recommends installing the pavers over crushed stone over coarse bedding sand for leveling and polymeric sand as a joint fill.
I have no idea which approach is better/worse.
Any thoughts/views anyone can share would be greatly appreciated.
No disagreement with contractor on how the pebbles will be handled (compacted crushed stone, coarse sand, fabric).

That’s good. Since you mention the weeds, FWIW the best thing we ever did was cover our entire yard with cardboard and mulch on top of that for a few months over a winter. Then we left in place and dug a hole if we wanted to add a new plant. That really made a huge difference and vastly reduced the weeds. Eventually they do return but it’s still better a decade or so later. We had a garden service/landscaper directing this and they also came two or three times a year for a couple hours for maintenance/weeding, and that also made a huge difference. It’s possible that a certain combination of plantings (such as boxwood or hydrangeas with mulch) together with pavers covering a certain proportion of the yard could be easier to maintain than pebbles. (After you kill the weeds with the cardboard.) The plantings and mulch keep the weeds away. Especially if you can find a service that will thoroughly weed for you two to four times a year.

Pebbles etc. over soil should be able to absorb rain just fine. Not sure that’s going to be easily maintainable as weed free however. Maybe there’s some permeable yet anti weed membrane they can use at the bottom. That still won’t prevent things sprouting on top of the pebbles but can’t do much about that.

@Cate – currently, the yard is already pitched away from the house and the back of the yard is all soil. We were going to lay the pebbles there on top of the soil (after putting down crushed stone and sand as the initial layers). I think this should address the point you raise or do you think I’m oversimplifying?

We installed engineered bluestone pavers a few years ago and also our mason did what the store said to do. AFAIK, installing the pavers over crushed stone over coarse bedding sand is absolutely required or everything will move and crack. Also, FWIW many of my neighbors have concrete yards and problems with flooding in the yard and cellar during rain. (They have French drains, but they clog.) Before you proceed, you might consider talking to a landscaper/gardener to find out if there’s a no-maintenance option that leaves enough exposed earth for the water to be absorbed.

I went the route your masonry supplier suggested. It’s been six years and zero maintenance. I have a combination of bluestone slabs and pavers. I used Kings. (kingsny.com) for the pavers. I supplied the slabs.
Does your contractor specialize in outdoor hardscaping? To a layman like myself, it seems like the thinset approach might fail over the course of a few years, especially if we get harsh winters. Trying to repair could be like pulling a thread.
