How much do Movers usually charge? What about for Storage?

How much do you estimate it should cost to move from a 2 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn to a house less than a mile away. We only have one bed.  How much additional would it cost if we needed the movers to store our stuff for 1-2 months between places? Any recommendations?

I dont know about movers but I do have some experience with putting stuff in storage. For a two bedroom apartment I would recommend renting at least a 10×10 unit, which in Brooklyn can run anywhere from $175-$300 per month. After a quick Google search here is what I found: http://www.selfstorage.com/self-storage/new-york/brooklyn/ — you can sort by whatever size you end up choosing.  There are some specials offered but this is just for the storage unit, if you use a moving storage company I am sure it will be at least a little cheaper. Do some calling around and see if you can get a quote from the moving storage companies in the area.

When I rented a truck from Uhaul’s website, they listed several local movers with reviews for me to choose from.  We were priced for a one bedroom apartment, and the cost was around $130 to unload our truck (so double for loading and unloading).  And you should account for a tip of $20/person or so.

I’ve used Prestige Movers three times in the last 6 years. They’re in Sheepshead Bay I think. Would highly recommend. They seem more affordable than others.

i used MNS several years ago to move a 2 bd apartment plus a 1bd apartment into a house a couple miles away. i believe they charged $1400, which may have been because Flatrate movers had quoted $1649 (Flatrate came over and did a total assessment of the larger apartment to determine this). MNS were fine but at the end of the move they insisted on at least a 20% tip, which I was not aware was required. I never got a straight answer about this, is 20% the expected going rate for a tip for movers?

I don’t think Movers Not Shakers charged me much at all for the month or so of storage…maybe just a couple hundred.

The reason that generic quotes are hard to give is that it’s typically by the hour, and the amount of time varies a lot based on many factors, such as: the amount of stuff you have; the number of steps to traverse; the presence of an elevator; how many loose (e.g. non-boxed) items you have; the amount of furniture you have (takes time to wrap those in blankets and plastic wrap); etc. The hourly rate also changes depending on the size of the truck; the number of movers; and whether it’s a prime moving day (e.g. right around the end of the month). That being said, we’ve done a few moves between 2 BR apartments, and it cost us between $500-$1000 each time. Figure that it’s $150-$200/hour; it’ll take 2-3 hours to load and 1-2 hours to unload; and maybe 1/2 hour travel time. Plus then you should tip the movers at least $20/person (unless they’re terrible and break everything). On our last move we moved everything into a storage unit, and that cost more (around $1200) because it took longer to unload and re-pack everything into the storage unit (it was a tight fit). One tip on the storage is to go to a place that has first month free. We did this with Extra Space Storage and moved everything out before the end of the month (closing took longer than expected and we just needed temporary storage), and ended up paying virtually nothing. I was skeptical that would actually work, but it does. FWIW, we’ve used Rabbit Movers every time and been really happy with them. They’re not big guys (I think everyone that works there is an artist/musician), but they have great customer service, they all work hard, and they do a really good job.

I would second DIBS’ comment – we went through many estimates with many moving companies (just for a move of 2 miles…) and Movers Not Shakers were the ONLY company that gave a firm estimate and stuck by it – No “we needed 2 extra hours so you’ll pay for that;” no “we didn’t realize you’d underestimated your stuff;” no nothing, except holding and sticking to the original quoted price.   Which was also a fair price.

Every move is different.  I used Movers Not Shakers and would NEVER USE ANYONE ELSE!!!!  They were great to deal with…on time, firm quote.  I used them for some temp storage too.
