Zepherine Drouhin is a cheap but hardy & carefree & bountifully bearing climbing rose in a lovely pink.

I have two pale pink climbing roses. One is Madame Alfred Carriere, which I ordered from Heirloom Roses. Highly recommend them. Plant arrived small but a decent size — was not bare root — and the branches grew about a foot or so the first year. In the third year now it’s really lush. Love Madame Alfred, though you should know the roses turn cream so they’re only pale pink for day or so. I also bought a New Dawn climber, which really is pale pink, at the Prospect Park sale last year. They’ve both done very well. At first Madame Alfred had some problems with thrips, but two pots of chives under the plant cured that completely. Both are heirlooms, so they don’t require any special care. They love the sun and don’t need much water once established. This web site also sells roses for shade — shade being a relative term — meaning less than five hours sun a day.

Never have planted a bare root rose bush. You mean they will ship in December or January and you wait for a warmish-day then (no problem, this year) and plant in the winter? This is new to me, but I have faith in growing things, so if that’s the way to do it, I’ll have no trouble with the faith-thing.

Dylanfan, check out David Austin’s website. He’s an English rose grower, and has a fantastic selection of all sorts of fragrant roses. His website is very well-organized to find the right plant for any situation. http://www.davidaustinroses.com/american/Advanced.asp?PageId=2062 Their shipping season is about to end, so don’t dilly dally if you want it this year. I suggest A Shropshire Lad I’d you’d like a pink climbing rose. It’s well adapted to our hot summers, and it’s very robust (in addition to having gorgeous pink blooms.)

when I first stated this garden around 12 years ago, I did not have a clue that there were different types of roses… that is actually a shrub rose that I train to look like a climber with floral wire attached to the chain link fenceĀ that is covered by the

clematis and other climbers. I cannot remember the name of it, but here is another shot if that would help
