A Freeze Expected Tonight
Hi All: A freeze is expected tonight. I’m a newbie gardener and was wondering: how is this going to affect all the plants that are budding/in bloom in my yard tonight? Everything seems a lot further along than it was this time last year. Is there anything I should do to protect the plants? Anything in particular that you’ve seen blooming/budding around Brooklyn that is certainly not going to like the frost tonight? i.e. are my tulips going to make it? Thanks

you can also put a empty pot on top of a young shoot and act as agreen house. My feeling is most plants can take a lot more than u think, and if they cant they dont belong in my garden. but at the same time i am going to drape old sheets on my roses……i know i am totally babying them 🙂

If you have budding plants that you want to baby do what north country people do: put a sheet over the plant. the sheet takes the frost and is a blanket that protects the tender plant. I’ll do that to my roses they are my babies.

Oh how about outsiide faucet/hose? Turn off or will there be enough retained heat to not freeze?

Considering how warm the ground is, there should be no consequences at all. The walls, paved ground and asphalt retain some heat, so it’s unlikely a Brooklyn backyard will actually have temperatures below freezing (unlike, say Prospect Park at its most exposed.) Early bulbs like tulips, circus or daffodils can take some colder temperature at night, and so can most early cherry and ornemental trees. The only thing to fear would be an ice storm, with a wet and heavy wintry mix precipitations.
