Where to find codes/regulations for two-family dwellings?

You’re going to have to be much more specific. There is no section of the code just for one and two families. The code is by topic, and each topic is broken up into the type of building it applies to.

Thanks I was afraid of that. I am buying a 2 family that apparently hasn’t had a visit from the city since 1937\. I am planning to do some renovations and was hoping to fix the things I needed to fix to get it up to code before calling the city in and getting violations and then having to go through the process of clearing those up. But it seems that’s the only way to go about it.

you need to know when your house was built and what work you are doing or not doing. the applicable code could be on line or not. Pre-1938 buildings could be subject to 1898, 1916, 1938, 1968 or 2008 codes, at least in part. The code is especially relaxed on one nad two family units. Similiarly, zoning is not retroactive. As long as you don’t create a new non-compliance, you are compliant. Just make sure your documents on huistoric conditions are all in order.
