How to mow a 150 sq ft lawn???
I have no recommendation, but I saw this somewhere, maybe it was Green Depot? http://www.razarsharp.com/2012/02/06/the-minimower/

The guy who installed the sod says we need to use a mower with a bag, but even the small mowers are huge and heavy! He insists a weedeater and rotary mower are going to ruin our lawn… does anyone have any experience with this? Would really appreciate some advice!

Brill makes a reel type mower with a catcher, i think the mower itself is 17 lbs.

A weedeater, or string trimmer is really easy to lose control of and tear a huge gouge into the grass, so unless you’re really comfortable using one, I’d avoid it for anything other than edging. They also tend to make a very ragged cut on the grass blade. With regards to the mower, I’m a little confused. Lots of rotary mowers have bags, reel mowers rarely do. Is he talking about a reel mower with a bag? They make reel mowers with bags, but they tend not to be too efficient at clipping collection. Anything without a bag is going to leave clippings on the grass, which over time will create a sort of strangling effect on the root system. That being said, if you rake, it’s the same thing as a mower with a blade, or you could get a mulching blade for a rotary mower and leave the clippings. Lots of municipalities are banning lawn waste in landfills now, so more and more manufacturers are making rotary mowers with mulching blades instead of bags. Reel mowers tend to take off less of the grass blade which means that while they don’t work as well on long grass, the clippings that they leave tend to decompose faster so most people don’t worry about collecting the clippings with a reel mower. They also tend to make a cleaner cut which is better for the grass. Last but not least, he may be worried about the fact newly laid sod isn’t really connected to the soil for a few weeks and going over it with a rotary mower can actually lift it off and suck it into the blades causing a mess all around. All that being said, I’d say that you’ll be fine with a reel mower with no bag, but I’d also trust the guy who installs sod for a living over my advice, so you may want to give him another call and clarify exactly what he is recomending.

Every sod person I have spoken to says you need a power mower. For this reason, we decided not to get sod but instead grew grass from seed. I bought the smallest Brill razorcut reel mower I could find from Clean Air Gardening at the beginning of the summer, and I love it.

We had no problems using a reel mower in our small yard. Just keep in mind that you need to mow often with it as, at least from my experience, they don’t work very well if the grass gets too tall. Every 4-6 days was working best for ours (work at our house has left us yardless for now, hence the past tense). Our mower doesn’t have a bag to catch the clippings and the yard was just fine. I was not mowing sod but grass I had planted from seed, fwiw.

I use a push mower and leaving clippings on the lawn is supposed to be good for the grass. NYC DOS reqiests that you leave grass clippings on the lawn. http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/compost/lawncare_grassclippings.shtml

Your grass guys sounds like a true craftsman, but unless you want a putting green, you don’t need a bag – you can just rake every once in a while. I have a Brill and it works fine, and despite what you may read, unless you are truly unskilled you won’t kill the grass with a weed whacker, (and for 150 sq. feet that’s by far the easiest option). What matters is the quality of the soil and the amount of water you are willing to put on it. And make sure if you have a dog you train it to pee in one area ( that’s not grass), or you’ll lose your investment within 2 years.
