using reclaimed beams for flooring?
Hello, We need to replace the flooring on our top two levels and would like to use reclaimed wood to keep the overall aesthetic the same throughout the house (luckily we’re able to just refinish the floors on the lower levels). Yesterday we came across a BEAUTIFUL option – using old beams cut to a wide floor plank size) rather than “typical” reclaimed barnwood or similar. It’s really lovely. We can’t afford it from the place we were looking, though, and are wondering two things: 1). has anyone else seen this and if so, where? and 2). could we have our OWN 120+ year old beams (many of which we’re taking out during the course of our gut reno) milled to make flooring – and if so, where? Thanks so much in advance, e

nearly thirty years ago I used an outfit called dimension lumber to run a custom size run of maple to fit into a loft building at the edge of tribeca…this might be them http://brooklyn.citysearch.com/profile/7392656/brooklyn_ny/dimension_lumber_corporation.htmli doubt, that it is cheap to go that route.. any good carpentry contractor that has a good quality table saw,thickness planer and shaper table could do the same thing,

We bought flooring — both heart pine and doug fir — milled from reclaimed beams from Pioneer Millworks upstate. We did a big reno but these were just my favorite of the vendors/tradespeople we dealt with. Our contractor was really impressed by the quality of the flooring and the very low level of waste — which I gather is quite unusual. It wasn’t cheap but it wasn’t outrageous either.

I bought reclaimed barnboard and they also sell reclaimed beams (both as beams and sawn into flooring) www.sylvanbrandt.com You won’t find better prices than these guys!!!! I don’t know if they will mll your wood for you (and they are rather far away) but I know of other places in Bucks County who do. maybe someone else can find you someone closer to do it. You also want to get them tongue and grooved after they are milled. Sylvan brandt sells theirs that way.
