Newbie asks: How much for a new hardwood floor?

Hi,  We’re hopefully, hopefully, hopefully going to close on an apartment soon. It has ugly parquet tiles that we would like to replace with hardwood planks (Brazilian cherry is my fav). Anybody know the approximate total cost of such a job? About 750-800 sq ft to cover. We don’t know about the subfloor. (Can the parquet be used as a subfloor?)

Our place in the Clinton Hill Co-ops had that ugly white oak parquet tile, glued down with some industrial adhesive from the 1950s (most likely black mastic, which can be an asbestos product). After talking to a few flooring contractors, we made the choice to leave the tile and use it as a subfloor since it was rock solid, and we had proper door clearance. We replaced with 10″ white oak planks that cost us ~7,000 with shipping (but it was a bit of a splurge, you could certainly find plank floors for less), and installation from Jose, who you will find highly recommended on this site, cost an additional ~2,000 (which included the cost of half-round moulding). The sponsor for the condo brownstone I’m in used cork tiles for the other units & after the floors in one of the units got super beat up they went in in and just covered the cork with hardwood even though there was a plywood subfloor.  It was easier for them plus the person below gets extra sound insulation!
